Historic Toronto Music Studio Leveled

August 20, 2010 by Chris

I just found out that someone is tearing down a music recording studio that RUSH and many other great Canadian and international bands once used to record some great classic albums.

Here is a short of who once called this once Toronto historical music recording studio home at one time in their life.

  • RUSH
  • Ringo Starr
  • Steve Winwood
  • Gordon Lightfoot
  • Aretha Franklin
  • Bachman-Turner Overdrive
  • Rosemary Clooney
  • Chubby Checker
  • James Brown

This ordinary one story unit was called the McClear building. It was located at 225 Mutual St., in Toronto.

“I’m a little saddened that it’s gone,” said former McClear chief engineer Jeff Wolpert. “It could have been designated historical. It had a lot of great ghosts.”

Just a side note here folks but another historical music site is just within ear shot of this place. It’s called Maple Leaf Gardens. Another historical site is within a stones throw as well, it’s the old CBC recording studio’s on Jarvis, directly to the south east of the McClear Building. My favorite and the one who influenced me the most as a very young player was Glenn Gould who recorded at the CBC studios for most of his career.

Scott Yellan, property director for Arsandco Investments, a company with ties Yellan would not precisely describe to both 225 Mutual and the nearby Best Western Primrose Hotel, said the studio building would be replaced by a parking lot. Toronto Star

In the infamous words of Joni Mitchell they paved paradise and put up a (F- – – – – -) parking lot!!! Assholes!

Keep on Jammin’

I wouldnt let it worry you too much.

You need to think positive about these things.

There songs will live forever on the radio and we all need a space to park our cars. Especially as we all seem to need more than one per family now.

That’s a shame, being a person who likes history and very much enjoys older architecture that’s really too bad. The songs and the performers will still be remembers as fondly; but they might have made so money doing tours or something.

I know what you are saying Kettering plasterer. I guess that I’m just one of those sentimental kind of guys, don’t mind me too much, ha!

I’m a big historian too Sandy! This building did not have all the much architectural significance but as they say it’s whats inside that counts.

In my view of things, I think that we desperately need to keep certain sites and retain what they meant to people in the past for future generations! Imagine if we in Toronto wanted to build some superstructure and we said hey, let’s just tear down the CN Tower and put this thing up right there!

    Thanx for the comment Sandy.

The upkeep of certain establishments are really high so if they are not in the Mowtown class its a sad, sad thing when they get demolished but hey thats life. Me? I like to imagine that the place people are tearing down is the spot where my spot is going to be… hahaha. Wishful thinking won’t hurt anybody

Le Studio in the woods was always the famous place for Rush – where their best music was recorded
