Counterpoint at the 2008 Nuance show

October 14, 2008 by Chris

CounterPoint is the band that impressed me, and I’m sure everyone else, the most at this years show. The brilliant musical virtuosos of each member was breath taking to hear. If I were to see them again at any other time in the future, then I’d be the first one in line!

The band consists of keyboardist Rick Kazmirchuk, bass player Chris Noto and drummer Joe Pawlowski.

The keyboardist Rick Kazmirchuk was playing on a Roland D-70, a Yamaha EX5 and a Proteus 9030 EMU. Great looking and sounding like a million bucks.

The eye catching one on the stage for me was Chris Noto! I closed my eyes and it might as well have been Chris Squire up there playing with the band, no kidding! He had a classic Black Rickenbacker bass, playing through another classic blast from the past, a punchy Ampeg bass amp head. Sorry, but I didn’t get a look at his cabinet. I was too busy watching him play. He alternated from a pick (which I did not ask which one he used) to plain finger playing.

Joe Pawlowski was the man behind the kit! He was using the drums that everyone was using, but too bad that he wasn’t on his own kit. He sounded and looked comfortable on this communal kit. He brought along with him, his gorgeous looking bronze 6 1/2 inch Ludwig, John Bonham special snare. It honestly was nice to look at and I’m not a drummer! There was one thing that caught my eye about his sound, it was that he wasn’t using the chains on his snare. I asked Joe after the show about this and he said that he like the sound and the feel of it, humm.

So if these guys are playing in your area, it is most to go and see them! It is a huge bargain for any price that you will pay at the door!

Keep on Jammin’ CounterPoint

Zappa on Politics and Politicians

October 9, 2008 by Chris

Frank Zappa was so ahead of his times in so many ways that saying that he was a genius is an understatement. Where have all the brilliant minds gone.

Just listen to him! Enjoy, I sure did!

They do more to entertain us then, serve us

To bad so many greats leave this planet far too early.

Allan Holdsworth

October 7, 2008 by Chris

Allan Holdsworth is one of those talented musicians that never really made it big internationally, but those who have heard of him like him a lot!

Kim Mitchell first heard of him in England while touring with Max Webster and fell in love with him. That’s all that I knew of the guy.

Being a huge Max Webster fan, and realizing the brilliance of Kim, I had to look into this guitar player. Besides, if he can play with Bill Bruford in The Bruford Band, he has to be good!

The man can float effortlessly from rock and jazz in a heart beat.

His dizzying right hand speed is not what impresses me. It is his music integrity that catches my eyes, ears and musical heart. In the 90’s, he stood fast by his musical mantra of staying away from the big record label scene and reinventing himself constantly album after album. Being labeled as one of the 100 Greatest Guitar players by Musician Magazine doesn’t hurt either!

Not only did he invent curious soloing skills, he created his own instruments. They are in the form of new guitar structure as well as electric technology. His unique guitar innovations now brings in a new way to look at and play the instrument, through the musical ears and eyes of this genius!

Anyone else heard of, or has anything else to add about this great guitarist Mr. Allan Holdsworth?

Keep on Jammin’
