Old school Record Show was a blast!

March 28, 2011 by Chris

After coming back from this Record Show I thought what a great show it was. I only had about 45-50 minutes to check out was there and I must say that I had a lot of fun.

There must of been 25 – 30 vendors selling their wares. Some were showing off albums, some concert pictures that they took themselves from some past shows and some who had collectible items like toys, old concert programs etc. There was a fair amount of DVD’s and VHS shows.

Some of the more bizarre things I saw was a bunch of KISS action figures, some Top of the Charts posters from the past and a few Partridge Family albums.

I didn’t pick anything up, I just had fun sorting through items on tables and chatting with collectors. Does anyone out there go to any of these types of shows on a regular basis?

Keep on Jammin’

Really dedicated to the cause

December 26, 2010 by Chris

With some genres of traditional music quickly going by the wayside in our ever evolving society, these older guitarists from Myanmar have my undying respect! Image being one of the last few remaining musicians that once accompanied silent films in theaters with their instruments. Think about the emotional experience that the musicians would be go through performing at a show like that when silent movies were the only show in town?

Personally I can say that playing in a band during a musical play was fantastic. I had the honour of playing in the band for our high school musical called Godspell. I can still hear the musical director, a self proclaimed tone deaf man, who always said “Damn it, HIWATT‘s should have wheels”! The live experience that you get while being part of something like this is something to cherish forever. All the miscues in during some parts of a show, starting in the wrong key or just plain not playing a song at all.

So check out this link to an LA Times article to see what I’m talking about.

Keep on Jammin’

Captain Beefheart we’ll miss ya!

December 18, 2010 by Chris

Captain Beefheart aka Don Van Vliet, passed away early this morning in California from complications of multiple sclerosis. He was 69. He was definitely an American original that simple cannot be replaced.

While most of Don Van Vliet’s work was considered too off the wall for most listeners, I thought it was gutsy and creative to see a musician push the envelope where not many have gone before!

Early on his music helped me think about playing guitar in different way. Don’s approach to music was very different from what all of the guys around me were playing and listening to while growing up in a small town. When I put an album of his on the record player, my buddies would sit there and say nothing … really. I guess they didn’t know what to think about it. His music didn’t always have a familiar rhythm to it I think.

Don’s drive was blues based music, with a big twist. He never was looking for commercial success, just like his good friend and fellow band mate Frank Zappa. He left the music scene in 1982 and tool up painting.

Go to this link for a fabulous article about the man.

I will have Captain Beefheart and his family in my prayers tonight.

Keep on Jammin’ Don where ever you are!!!
