A real nice mix of stylers

August 22, 2007 by Chris

This video is just full of full stuff for just about every style of player and listener a like.

Around the 00:40:00 and 00:02:30 mark are the parts that I like the best of this tune. It looks like way too much fun to play live!

Enjoy.

The great Mississippi John Hurt

August 3, 2007 by Chris

If you love Mississippi blues guitar playing then you’ll love Mississippi John Hurt. I myself like the blues/folk but he was the one who made me fall in love with it.

It is the type of music that will immediately have your feet a tapping, that’s what happened to me first time that I heard him. The man’s playing makes you feel good, plain and simple. Every aspect from lyrics to music is so up beat, it’s quite infectious.

He was born July 2nd, 1894 in Teoc, Mississippi, eighth of ten children born to Paul Hurt and Mae Jane Smith. He grew up in Avolan Mississippi and started to play guitar at the tender age of 9. He performed at many social events while still working on a there during the 1920’s.

He played with the likes of legendary Blues musician, Willie Narmour who helped draw the attention of Okeh Records (which was purchased by Columbia Records) to his distinct playing style.

John Hurt was a major influence to my favorite musician of all time Mr Bruce Cockburn. The guy is turning into my hero as well. If he’s good enough for Bruce then he’s good enough for me!

While being introduced to me for the first time, his music is just crisp and pure as snow. His own unique style transfers you back to a time that seems quite foreign to us today. I put him right up there with Billy Holiday, who is my favorite jazz singer of all time.

I honestly believe that being exposed to this style is very good to your musical soul!

The best song Pylis ever did

July 15, 2007 by Chris

My most treasured song that I’ve had the privilege to have played live and that gave me the most goose bumps was Don’t be Late by Saga. It was also the best song, hands down, that we ever pulled off and there were many of them left in the hat!

The song had it all. It was a slow ballad one minute and then all out Prog Rock insanity the next.

The first solo was one that I could almost literally squeeze the sap out of the fretboard. I milked that one for all it’s worth! It was a cross between a David Gilmore and Alex Lifeson’s Hemisphere’s influence. It almost made me cry it was just so beautiful! Then there was the second solo.

This solo was not so melancholy. It was staccato, fast and flowing. I also had to be soloing seamlessly with the keyboardist Tony, but it was a treat to play with that guy!

So here’s a song that I was infatuated with to play live and I hope you love it too!

Keep on Jammin’
