Randy Bachman to rock at Luminato free opener

March 16, 2009 by Chris

Canada’s most prolific guitarist/songwriter of our generation, randy Bachman, will be opening the third annual Luminato. It will be located in downtown Toronto’s Young & Dundas square on June 5th of this year.

Honestly, I’ve never been to any of these events but, this year will be much different!

The god-father of Canadian guitar, is really looking forward to initiate the opening of the Luminato Guitar festival lineup in the heart of Toronto. He told reports that musicians often wonder to themselves Why aren’t I playing that and said that this is one such event that he could not miss out on. He said it about Woodstock, but he won’t be saying it about this year’s Luminato event!

Because of the recession, it’s great to have a big opening free concert!

Also at this years celebration of everything guitar, we are going to be attempting to break a Guinness World record at this location as well! It will be called The Great Canadian Tune

Some of Toronto’s most talented, or so they think, and lucky residents will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for Largest Guitar Ensemble. The talented one’s I hope, will have a massive jam session playing ten of the greatest Canadian tunes ever simultaneously.

The current record was held in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany. There, 1,802 guitarists gathered to perform Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water.”

In the weeks leading up to the Festival, audiences will be asked to log on to luminato website to place their votes for The Great Canadian Tune. Got any in mind?

So listen up everybody, here is a BIG heads up on what to do on June 5th in Toronto, if your not that busy?! Hope to see ya there!

Keep on Jammin’

Great TABs for John Mayer

March 6, 2009 by Chris

I feel that this is the best site for John Mayer tabs, period! I have found it a great source to turn to, if I come up against a mental road block when learning one of his tunes. I can still remember the first time I came across this site! I quickly ran threw the whole site and committed it to memory, just in case the suites wanted to pull the plug on it.

The site is simple and very easy to use. The contents are straight forward and never cluttered.

Not only does this place provide you with some GREAT tabs for playing John’s creations but, it also has a MISCELLANEOUS TABS part that I just found out about while going back through the site while writing this post. They’ve worked on Damien Rice, Cold Play, Ari Heist tunes as well Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley. Check out the Various area and try the Somewhere over the rainbow one, it’s just fabulous! A buddy sent me a link from this guy playing this song on a eukalalee and it sounded so great, I decided to check out the tabs here and sure enough, they were bang on!

Keep on Jammin’

A great guitar intro to play

February 25, 2009 by Chris

The best guitar intro that I never did play live was the one that belongs to “Feels so good” by Chuck Mangione! I can appreciate some people saying OMG, what the hell is this guy on? But honestly, playing this one is a great feeling!

I have some fond memories with this one. I was around 13 years old, playing in a KISS tribute band called Deuce. Brain M.(guitar/bass/singer) and Eddie K. (drummer) were great guys to hang around with. The tunes we played were fun, but not that much challenging to me at the time.

My guitar guru/teacher the great Chris P. from Brantford, was always trying to direct me in very subtle ways towards Jazz AND GOD BLESS HIM FOR THAT!!! He started to introduce me to this neat form of music and I really liked it!

He showed me these chord progressions that just blew my mind! Imagine, who would have thought that there were more chords out there to play then just the ones I played. I was one of those kidz who picked up the guitar very easily. Everyone was always looking at me because they thought I knew everything … boy did this prove them wrong!

Then there was this song that was on the radio that I thought was JUST GREAT, the beginning and the solo part of it that is! The other parts were ok, but these were the parts I wanted to play. I let my buddy’s listen to it and you can only imagine what thy thought of it. This song was called Feel so good!

It was the first song that I started out listening to it and closing my eyes and concentrating on every little chord that the guitar player played. I tried to figure it out, I was always good at figuring out song but this was way out of my comfort zone. I then brought it up to my guru and he smiled at me and said that I’m ready!

His way of teaching me a song was to show me just small sections of a piece and would send me home to practise it over and over again until I mastered it and ONLY THEN would he show me the rest of it! To this day, THIS IS HOW I FIGURE OUT A SONG TO PLAY IN A BAND! Chris showed me to take a part song inside out before going on to the rest. It just makes sense to approach a song in this manor, got it CounterPoint! This is how I play!

So here is the solo part of the song that I fell in love with so many years ago and I want to share it with you. I only wish that I had the opportunity to of heard the late great Coleman Mellett’s interpretation of this master piece!

RIP Coleman Mellett, Keep on Jammin’
