4 Tricks To Improve The Sound Quality Of Your Headphones

December 21, 2012 by Chris

In spite of the fact that some people do not mind spending a small fortune on a state-of-the-art pair of headphones with a limited three year warranty, they do get upset when the quality of the sound is ghastly. Unfortunately, in the vast majority of cases the poor sound quality stems from the fact that they did not purchase the right pair to start with. In other words, when it comes to headsets, it is best to shop around until you find something that suits you, rather than acquire an expensive pair of earpieces only simply because they are popular. The good news is that even if you did get stuck with a pair of headphones with poor sound quality, there are still a few hacks you could try before storing them away for good. Let’s elaborate!

1. Try to clean them first

Even though cleaning the earpieces regularly might seem intuitive, you would be surprised about the number of people who “forget” about this little aspect. In the eventuality that you notice the sound in your headphones has decreased lately, then it is time to clean them up. Besides, washing them is a fairly easy activity as you all need to do is wipe them with a mildly wet cloth and soft soap. In case they include metal parts that are extremely dirty, then you can clean them with a toothbrush.

2. Are you using them properly?

While this is surely not the only pair of headphones you had, it is necessary to point out that no earpiece is like the other. To put it simply, it could very well be that you grew accustomed to your old pair of headsets so much that you are using your new headphones in a similar manner. This is especially true for the in-ear buds and a good method of getting the best sound out of them is to “tinker” with them until they feel comfortable and the sound improves.

3. You could turn them into speakers

If the cleaning did not do the trick, then you could always try to turn them into speakers. More often than not, people often find themselves in the situation when they would absolutely love to listen to some music while cleaning the house, organizing their desk or doing a repetitive task. Sadly, the only thing they actually have in their home is a pair of headsets. However, did you know that you could attach two paper cups to the earpieces and transform them into veritable speakers? And, the best part is that this “construction” also improves the quality of the sound.

4. Integrate some noise isolating features

In the eventuality that regardless of what you do, you keep hearing the background noise rather than your favorite music, then you should consider adding some noise isolating features. The open pair headsets’ sound quality can be boosted exponentially if you attach it to a nice set of industrial earmuffs, whereas for the in-ear buds you can use some earplug foam to isolate the background sound. As a side note, there are plenty of DIY guides on the web as well as specialized services that could lend you a hand in this case.

Bands at the Taste of the Danforth 2011

September 4, 2011 by Chris

I found the bands that played at the Taste of the Danforth, a local food festival here in Toronto,  were very distinctive.

The Taste of the Danforth is held every year on the second weekend of August and there’s always lots of food and music and it’s just a good time in the cities Greek Town.  Since my wife and I live in this area of the city we try to go each year.

The first stage we came to is called Immortals Greek Stage at Jones and Danforth Ave at about 8:00 PM.

First we ran into this Greek band called Arkadia. The band was fun to watch but what got my attention was the drummer of the band. His on stage energy levels reminded me of the drummer who played with Carlos Santana, a Michael Shrieve, on the epic Woodstock Music & Art Fair Festival concert. I would definitely pay to see them live.

The next band we saw/heard was The Frank D’Angleo Band at the Celebrity Stage at Danforth and Logan beside Alexander the Great Park. This is the main stage at the event and it is setup perfectly. There is a licensed patio in front of the stage and of coarse it was packed! We were inside, what I feel is the best place on the Danforth to get a Giros, Alexandros.

This guy is a true entertainer. How he interacted with the large crowd in front of him was mesmerizing. He had a couple of backup singers and a good sized horn/sax section that gave me goose bumps up and down my arm when they were playing a few progressions during the show. Those in attendance can back me up on that one. We were there about 8:45 if memory serves me correctly.

So those are the bands that drew me in the most and I’m looking forward to next years program. Anyone else out there that went to the 2011 Taste of the Danforth that can chime in?

Keep on Jammin’

C. F. Martin Acoustic Guitar factory

July 8, 2011 by Chris

The original C.F. Martin acoustic guitar factory is a place that I’d love to see before I die! Due to the fact that I’m terrified of flying, I think that driving would definitely be the route for me take. Anyone into a road trip?! It’s roughly 683 km (425 miles) from Toronto and only a 8 hour drive.

Over the years I’ve played on many Martin Guitars. Every one of them were very different in the way that they played or sound. When I was a younger, one of the small things that stuck in my mind, while playing one of these gems, was the contrasting widths of the necks.

I then started thinking to myself, with this Martin acoustic I could play a particular song on this one better on it then another one. Humm. Then while playing on a completely different Martin I could fool around with another song I would find that it was easier on this one then the one that I previously played it on and so on.

Some time later on, I came to the realization that not all Martin acoustic guitars are made exactly the same. Why where they like that? Remember I was only a 13 year old back then. I constantly thought that these guys must really know what they are doing. Over the years I would dream about where the Martin guitars were made and who these guitar makers were.

So if I walked through the doors of the original C.F. Martin plant, I bet it would be quite the experience. I bet I would be transformed back to those early days, contemplating why each guitar was unique from the other. I imagine that I might smell the scent of fresh cut wood, be exposed to some rare humidity that would be hanging in the air. The overall sense of history that you get by walking through it’s hollowed hallways would stay with me for a long time.

So considering the weather is kinda crazy this winter, I guess this video will be the next best thing to being there. Enjoy.

Here are a couple of great video tours of the C.F. Martin factory brought to you by Premier Guitar.
